The Value of Vision

What comes to mind when you hear the word vision? Like most of us, you are probably thinking about how well you can see. Others might think of a five-year business plan and the “vision” they have for their company. As important as both of these may be, there is an understanding of the term “vision” that is crucial to our lives, the lives of our families, and the welfare of our communities.

Think about what vision brings to our life. Simply put, when we can see, we can understand. When fog sets in and you cannot tell where the road starts and stops, your vision is compromised, and you are in danger of crashing your car. When walking through a dark room in the middle of the night, your vision is diminished, and you are in danger of walking into a piece of furniture or a wayward toy your kids left out. When trying to navigate your way home under the influence of drugs or alcohol, your thinking is impaired, and you are not able to negotiate your actions correctly. Vision and understanding are crucial to everything we do.

The Bible says that “without vision, the people perish.” (Proverbs 29:18) It is interesting to look back and see that the more of God’s Word we removed from the public square, the more our country began to slowly inch its way from united to divided. A time when now, everyone wants to be able to do what is right in their own eyes. My dear reader, take heart! The remedy is within reach. Our country, communities, and homes need a renewed vision, or understanding, of who God is and knowledge of His will. We need a resurgence of the Bible.

Think about it. The more Bible is removed from the public square, the more divorce increases, anxiety rises, and the swelling experience of depression is amplified. So, what do we do? Simple. Bring the Bible back into our lives and as much as the Lord would allow, back into the lives of those around us. A recent study done by the Center For Bible Engagement has shown that when people decide to read the Bible 4 days a week or more, the feeling of loneliness drops 30%, anger issues decrease 32%, bitterness towards others drops 40%, drunkenness is lowered by 49%, sex outside of marriage goes down 68%, viewing pornography goes down over 60%, and destructive habits and thoughts decrease by 61%.

So, dear reader, how is your vision? Do you know the Lord and clearly see the life He is calling you to live? Is there a true understanding of Who God is and what He is like? If not, renew your vision, pick up your Bible, and begin to read. If you do not know where to start, the Gospel of Matthew would be a great place to begin your journey.
