National Day of Prayer

Within every human heart is an acute awareness of our need for God and God’s help! Even those who deny His very existence, call out for help when trials or trauma are upon them. Make no mistake. The universe cannot help you, religion cannot save you, and no amount of good works can help you level up in eternity. It is Jesus Christ, the creator of all things seen and unseen, the One who was, and is, and is to come, and it is He alone who can show divine favor and mercy upon mankind. Our confidence does not lie in our faith but in Who our faith is in. It is because of His sovereign power and eternal rule that the National Day of Prayer was established. In 1952 we were experiencing global uncertainty and looming threats coming forth because of the Korean War. It was then that President Harry S. Truman issued a proclamation making the first Thursday in May an annual call to the nation to seek the Lord in humble prayer and fasting.

If you’re thinking this sounds unconstitutional - Try again! In April of 2011, The National Day of Prayer was unsuccessfully challenged in court by the Freedom From Religion Foundation and was unanimously upheld by a federal appellate court. Not only is it constitutional but it is consistent with the foundation of our nation. President Truman joined the ranks of our forefathers, issuing this proclamation and calling the nation to prayer. Men like George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Thomas Jefferson, John Adams, and James Madison called the nation to prayer and fasting. Similar calls to national prayer and repentance were repeatedly made throughout our nation's history.

I often find echoing through my mind the words that Benjamin Franklin spoke to the Constitutional Convention on June 28, 1787. “I've lived, Sir, a long time, and the longer I live, the more convincing proofs I see of this Truth — That God governs in the affairs of men. And if a sparrow cannot fall to the ground without his notice, is it probable that an Empire can rise without His aid? We have been assured, Sir, in the Sacred Writings, that except the Lord build the House they labor in vain who build it. I firmly believe this, — and I also believe that without His concurring Aid, we shall succeed in this political building no better than the Builders of Babel:
The Bible records God’s call to repentance and prayer. God says, “If My people who are called by My name will humble themselves, and pray and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and heal their land.” (2 Chronicles 7:14)

To all those who name the name of Jesus, I implore you to join us in person on
Thursday, May 4th for the National Day of Prayer. If you can make it to the State Capitol in Boise at 4:00pm, we will be on the front steps in song and prayer. Spread the word and come PRAY FOR OUR CITIES, FIRST RESPONDERS, MILITARY, EDUCATORS, GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS, CHURCHES, AND OUR NATION!
